Devil’s Way by Robert Bryndza

Devil’s Way is the fourth book in the Kate Marshall detective series by Robert Bryndza and my most recent Vinted book. I have read all three of the previous books in the series – Nine Elms, Shadow Sands and Darkness Falls.

Published in 2023, Devil’s Way sees private detective Kate in hospital, following an accident in the sea while swimming. There she meets Jean (a woman annoyingly described as ‘elderly’ on the blurb) who tells her the story of her grandson, Charlie, who went missing 11 years ago, when he was just three years old.

The police were unable to track him down, and Jean and her family have never found peace since his disappearance. Can Kate and her assistant, Tristan, find out what really happened to Charlie?

Kate and Tristan head for Devil’s Way, the area where Charlie was camping with Jean and his parents when he disappeared. The police believed he’d been swept away by the river, but Kate and Tristan aren’t so sure.

A social worker had been involved with the family and there had been suspicions about Jean’s former partner. When Kate discovers that the social worker was murdered shortly after Charlie’s disappearance, she thinks it must be more than a coincidence…

This is another page turner from Robert Bryndza, which I devoured in under three days. In the past, I’ve had issues with excessive typos in Robert Bryndza books. I’m pleased to say there were no typos this time, just the annoyance of women in their 50s called Jean and Maureen – which are most definitely names for women in their 80s or 90s!

If you enjoy a detective story, the Kate Marshall series is well worth a read. You could read the previous books beforehand if you wanted to, but Devil’s Way works well as a standalone novel.
