I picked Liz Nugent’s Lying in Wait up when we were shopping for books for my daughter. The blurb sounded interesting and it had the magical words ‘Gone Girl fans will love… ‘ on the front. I’m a sucker for a book that is recommended for Gone Girl fans.
Lydia has the perfect life in her big house with her husband and her beloved son, Laurence. But there is just one more thing that she wants – and she asks her husband to get it for her. When it proves impossible, there is a struggle and a girl dies. Suddenly Lydia has a dead body on her hands, but it doesn’t stop her in her pursuit of perfection, at whatever cost.
I was hooked on this book from the very first moment. It doesn’t waste any time on introductions – we get straight to the murder.
Told from the point of view of Lydia, Laurence and the victim’s sister, Karen, it pieces together life both before and after the murder. What was Lydia so obsessed with that she was prepared to let a girl die for it?
Needless to say, this is a real page turner and I read it in under a week, which is much quicker than I usually read a book.
As the story progressed, I couldn’t see how it was going to end. I just knew it wouldn’t end well. I so wanted a happy ending for Laurence, who was a lovely character. I can safely say that it didn’t end well and I definitely didn’t see the ending coming.
If you enjoy a psychological thriller with lots of twists and turns, you will love Lying in Wait.

Hmm. It sounds like an exciting book but I’ve read a couple of psych thrillers lately and been a bit underwhelmed. I’m not sure whether to persevere or decide it’s just not my genre.

Maybe it isn’t your genre?! This is a brilliant book, but no good reading it if it’s not your sort of book. x

It’s actually not that similar to Girl on the Train, but would appeal to fans of it I’m sure. I’m always careful not to do any spoilers in my reviews, even though it means the reviews can lack a bit of detail!

It’s really dark, isn’t it? The mum is one of the most evil characters I’ve ever read!
