The Greek alphabet

My younger son never ceases to amaze me. Today he stunned me again and I knew I had to write it down so I don’t forget it. And I’m writing it here and sharing it with you. Hope you learn something new from him too. I did – and so did his teacher…

He comes home from school and says: “I was thinking about the Greek alphabet and the first letters, Alpha and Beta, and I was looking at them and putting them together and I was wondering whether that’s where the word ‘alphabet’ comes from. So I asked Mr B and he looked up the word ‘alphabet’ in the dictionary and it said ‘origin – Greek alphabet, alpha and beta’.”

Well I’ve been an English language pedant for 40 years and that thought had never crossed my mind. His class teacher is the English lead at school and it clearly hadn’t crossed his either.

Once more I find myself wondering exactly where my son came from…

  2. Thanks, ladies! It’s so obvious when you think about it, isn’t it? I don’t think as parents we have time to think about such things – we’re far too busy! That’s my defence and I’m sticking to it!
