Love Untold by Ruth Jones

I picked up Love Untold by Ruth Jones at my friend’s charity book sale, at the same time as I bought Little and Eye For an Eye. It’s not a book I would have chosen to buy normally, but for £1 and to support a charity, it seemed worth a try!

Published in 2022, Ruth Jones’ third novel is the story of four generations of women. Grace is nearly 90, but still independent. She enjoys swimming in the sea and getting out and about in the local town of Dylan’s Quay. Her granddaughter, Elin, is organising a surprise birthday party for Grace. She is also stressing over her daughter Beca’s GCSE results and her marriage to husband Greg is going through a rocky patch.

Then there is Alys.

Grace has been estranged from her daughter, and Elin from her mother, for nearly 30 years. But as her big birthday approaches, Grace wants to try once more to track Alys down.

An alcoholic who has been sober for 30 years, can Alys finally be trusted?

As the four women come together at a turning point in all their lives, can they make amends before it is too late?

We find out the backstory of the various characters and how they became estranged. There was also a fairly big twist close to the end, which I actually guessed.

Love Untold is a sweet and easy read about family, friendship and love. I read nearly all of it while waiting for a delayed flight home from Geneva after our skiing holiday. It is written with Ruth Jones’ trademark warmth and there are even a small number of Nessa-isms from Beca’s friend, Soozi. If books about love and friendship are your thing, I would recommend Love Untold.
