Eye for an Eye by M J Arlidge
I bought Eye for an Eye by M J Arlidge for £1 at my friend’s charity book sale, at the same time as I picked up Little. Published in 2023, it focuses on criminals granted anonymity and completely new identities for their own safety.
There are only nine criminals in the UK who have lifelong anonymity because of their terrible crimes. In Eye for an Eye, their true identities are revealed to their victims’ families…
The story follows multiple characters, all told in the third person, in fast-moving, short chapters. Characters include the anonymous criminals, like single mum, Emily, and Jack, just starting a new life in a new town. There’s also probation officer, Olivia, and Detective Inspector Chandra Dabral, who is leading the investigation, as well as victim’s father, Mike.
When criminals start dying in gruesome ways, it’s clear who the murderers are. The challenge is finding who leaked the information in the first place. The criminals’ true identities are a closely guarded secret, which only a very limited number of people can access. So the leak must have come right from the very top.
Can Chandra find out the source of the leak before more people die?
Eye for an Eye is a real page turner. Set over the space of a few days, the large number of characters mean the pace never drops. If you enjoy a thriller, Eye for an Eye comes highly recommended.
