My favourite blogposts of 2024
As 2024 comes to an end, this is a round-up of some of my favourite blogposts from my own blog.
Although I don’t blog as much as I used to back in the early days, I still blog once a week about my life. It’s often about running. but sometimes it’s about life with my empty nest or some other random aspect of life.
For me, some posts are more memorable than others. So these are some of my favourites. Have you read them before? Have I missed any of your favourites?
I wrote You, Me and the Dog in the summer, following a holiday to Tenby with just my husband and Hetty. My eldest had moved into a rented flat, my younger son had already been at university for two years and we were preparing ourselves for my daughter to go to uni too.
My daughter going away to university was the biggest thing which happened to our family this year, so of course I had to mark it in a blogpost about our empty nest.
In Going to university – it’s a lot! I highlighted all the things young people have to deal with when they first start university. For some young people, it can be overwhelming and they may take days, weeks or even months to settle. If you’ve got kids going to uni in 2025, it’s worth having a read. Because university is a lot!
I wrote Growing up, not growing away after seeing a flurry of posts on social media from parents of tweens and young teenagers assuming their kids soon won’t to spend time with them in future. I wanted to assure them that many older teenagers and young adults do want to spend time with their families and there are ways you can make that more likely to happen.
Definitely the most random post I wrote all year was Where have all the Sarahs gone?. When I was at school, there was often five Sarahs in my class. At university, there were three of us – out of only 28 people. Yet as an adult, I never seem to encounter people called Sarah any more. How did that happen?
People always told me that having a dog would bring joy. But how much joy? It turns out, it is a lot of joy. Hetty has changed our lives for the better and we wouldn’t be without her for the world.
While Hetty is undoubtedly a joy, are there downsides of having a dog? I summed them all up in Is having a dog a hassle?.
Of course, I couldn’t write a round-up without some mention of running, so I thought I’d highlight some of my greatest running achievements of the year, starting with an incredible and unexpected parkrun PB at Marine Parade parkrun in Weston-super-Mare.
And my biggest running achievement of the year, completing Newport marathon with a London marathon Good for Age qualifying time. (Even if I didn’t actually end up making the cut for a London GFA place.)
