The Shut Eye by Belinda Bauer

The Shut Eye is a humorous crime novel by Belinda Bauer. I love Belinda Bauer’s style of writing. Her stories are real page turners and always funny.

Published in 2015, The Shut Eye is Belinda Bauer’s sixth novel. It’s not part of the Exmoor trilogy, which I read earlier this year, but it does remind me quite a lot of them – particularly of Finders Keepers. It even features one of the characters from the Exmoor trilogy – DCI John Marvel, one of the most unpleasant police officers I’ve come across in a book.

Anna, James and Daniel were a family like any other. But the front door was left open and four year old Daniel disappeared without trace. All that remains of him are five footprints in the concrete…

Daniel’s loss nearly breaks Anna, who blames James for leaving the door open. In desperation, she goes to see a medium in a church hall. He’s been on TV and gives his audience messages from the dead. If there’s no message from Daniel, surely he couldn’t be dead?

Sometimes the grief and loss take Anna over completely and she acts as though she is possessed. Is she mad or is this just what happens when a woman loses her child?

Meanwhile, DCI Marvel is taken off the case of a missing girl and sent to look for a missing dog. Surely a missing dog is way below the skills of a talented DCI? But it will give him ammunition for the future…

If you like a humorous crime novel (and can cope with stories about missing children), The Shut Eye is a great read. It is every bit as entertaining as Belinda Bauer’s other books. I would definitely recommend them all!

    1. That is Belinda Bauer’s great skill! All of her books are humorous, while some of the stuff that happens is quite dark.
