Lisey’s Story by Stephen King

Lisey’s Story by Stephen King was published in 2006. He mentioned it in the notes of Cell, which I read earlier this year. I’m pretty sure he said it was a love story and one of his favourites, so I thought I would read it. But a Stephen King love story is still a Stephen King…

The blurb on the back says: Every marriage has two hearts, one light and one dark.

Lisey was married to the famous author, Scott Landon, for 25 years. Only Lisey knew that Scott’s books were based on the terrifying reality of his life. Now, two years after his death, Lisey and her sister Amanda are tackling all of Scott’s books and papers.

But the papers and artefacts bring back memories, some good and some bad, of Scott’s life. And now a deranged ‘fan’ is out to get Lisey. As she juggles problems with her sisters, she has to draw on Scott’s darkness and strength to survive.

Most of the action in Lisey’s Story takes place over just a few days, but the memory sequences are long and detailed, giving the reader a picture of Scott and Lisey’s life together and Scott’s tough childhood.

Lisey’s Story is a long book at over 600 pages. I enjoyed parts of it, but others dragged a bit for me, even though I think Stephen King is a phenomenal writer. I like my books based in reality, but this had elements which were veering into fantasy and horror territory. If you like a dark love story with a bit of fantasy woven in, you will enjoy Lisey’s Story. But I think I’ll stick with the Holly series.

  1. This sounds like a fascinating plot, but yes, looks a bit long. Stephen King tends to be too scary for me but I do love his writing. Maybe one day I’ll get brave and tackle a few more of his books. 🙂

    1. I actually like a long book as they feel better value! His writing is brilliant, but this wasn’t one of my favourites.
