Cold summer

Last summer was underwhelming. We had a few hot days in June and a few hot days in September and in between it was chilly and damp. Photos from last year’s holiday to Padstow show it was never warm enough to take our jumpers off. Most of the photos show us in coats standing in pouring rain.

I felt cheated by last summer, so I had high hopes for this summer.

I’m a person who NEEDS summer. I don’t like dark and cold. I like light and warmth. I suppose I suffer from mild Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I need the summer to recharge me.

And then we got to summer 2024.

A mild winter and talk of climate change morphed into a cold spring. Then the cold spring seamlessly morphed into a cold, wet summer. We had a few warm days at the end of June, but it never got above the mid-20s.

Then we went Tenby. In my head, Tenby was warm and sunny. In reality, the highest temperature it hit was 16 degrees. On our last full day, it was 14 degrees with a cold wind. Everyone had their coats on – and a lot of them were winter coats. I was frozen all day, despite it being July.

This is not the summer I wanted or needed!

Even my husband, who doesn’t worry about the weather anywhere near as much as me, is fed up of it.

The week after Tenby, we had three days of PROPER SUMMER. It was sunny and warm, verging on hot. The temperatures were in the mid to high-20s.

But that was it.

Three days.

Then the temperatures dropped and the clouds and rain came back.

We’ve had some days in the low 20s and some sunny afternoons. But it has largely been miserable again.

Looking at the weather app, it looks like we might be due for some sun next week and temperatures of 23 or 24. I’m really hoping it happens and that it sticks around for a few weeks. It’s August next week and I’m aware we only have about a month of summer left.

I’m really hoping that those last few weeks can be dry, warm and sunny.

I am so over this cold summer.
