I’m a proper morning person. I’ve gone from getting up at 6 out of necessity when the kids were little to just getting up at 6 because I like it. Yes, even at weekends. I’m often actually awake even earlier and, no, I don’t go to bed early. I’m rarely asleep much before 12.
So what do I do in the morning? There’s the usual stuff – getting the kids up, dressed, breakfasted, lunches made and kids out of the door. Of course, theoretically, they should do this stuff themselves, but they’re KIDS for goodness sake! They need a fair amount of nagging encouragement. Then there’s sorting out washing – hanging wet stuff, transferring damp things to radiators, putting dry clothes away… There’s empty the dishwasher and tidying up the kitchen and I even have to get myself ready.
But mornings are also a peaceful time for me and that’s partly why I like them so much. They are the only time of day when I’m on my own. The rest of the family don’t get up until around 7.15. I can do these jobs without getting pulled in 10 different directions at once and I can also relax a bit. I spend a little bit of time on social media and usually read a magazine while I eat my breakfast.
Every morning is different – there’s work days, non-work days and weekends (aka sport days). There are days when I drop the kids at my mum’s and days when my mum comes round to us. There are days with lots of packed lunches and days with not so many.
It doesn’t sound like much, but I usually feel like I’ve run a marathon by the time it’s all complete and the house is reasonably straight and everyone is where they’re supposed to be.
About three times a week, I do then run my own miniature marathon (of about four and a half miles) once everything is sorted. That is the absolute best time of the morning. Then my day really can start on a positive note.
