The Gallery: Morning 2013

I’m a proper morning person. I’ve gone from getting up at 6 out of necessity when the kids were little to just getting up at 6 because I like it. Yes, even at weekends. I’m often actually awake even earlier and, no, I don’t go to bed early. I’m rarely asleep much before 12.

So what do I do in the morning? There’s the usual stuff – getting the kids up, dressed, breakfasted, lunches made and kids out of the door. Of course, theoretically, they should do this stuff themselves, but they’re KIDS for goodness sake! They need a fair amount of nagging encouragement. Then there’s sorting out washing – hanging wet stuff,  transferring damp things to radiators, putting dry clothes away… There’s empty the dishwasher and tidying up the kitchen and I even have to get myself ready.

But mornings are also a peaceful time for me and that’s partly why I like them so much. They are the only time of day when I’m on my own. The rest of the family don’t get up until around 7.15. I can do these jobs without getting pulled in 10 different directions at once and I can also relax a bit. I spend a little bit of time on social media and usually read a magazine while I eat my breakfast.

Every morning is different – there’s work days, non-work days and weekends (aka sport days). There are days when I drop the kids at my mum’s and days when my mum comes round to us. There are days with lots of packed lunches and days with not so many.

It doesn’t sound like much, but I usually feel like I’ve run a marathon by the time it’s all complete and the house is reasonably straight and everyone is where they’re supposed to be.

About three times a week, I do then run my own miniature marathon (of about four and a half miles) once everything is sorted. That is the absolute best time of the morning. Then my day really can start on a positive note.

  4. My problem is I’d have to get up at 5 to get an hour to myself 🙂 hoping as the kids get older this will change! School also starts much earlier here… Mornings are busy 🙂

  5. We are all up at 6am, a bit of a hectic hour, then Mr B leaves for work. Dogs walked, hens fed, cup of tea, then I can start work. I love the early mornings because it means I have afternoons relatively free.

  6. There’s something extra specially peaceful about a morning with no little people up and about isn’t there? I sometimes get that on a Saturday morning, just nice to have a cup of tea in peace – I’m not really a morning person!

  7. I love my mornings off when the kids are in school and nursery and I have peace for a few hours. Not that I go running anymore. My knees couldn’t cope. It is peaceful though and you’re full of energy the rest of the day.

  8. Thanks very much, everyone 🙂
I can’t believe how early your school starts, Sara! I didn’t used to be able to run on weekdays before my kids were at school and I still only manage it on days when I’m not at work.

  9. I often long for the days when i don’t get dragged out of bed by a baby but I have a horrible suspicion this might happen to me. Now I’m so used to getting up I’m not sure I could go back!

  10. Thanks very much for your comments, ladies! That’s exactly it, Emma! Once you’ve got used to getting up early, it’s hard to go back! But nice if it’s you choice!
