Project 365 2019 Week 18

The last few days before my marathon, and I’ve still got my bad cold.

Here’s our week in pictures…

Day 118 – Sunday 28th April – I woke up at 4am with my ears ringing loudly, it was horrible. I took some paracetamol and went back to sleep, which is rare for me. Normally if I’m awake at 4, that’s me awake for the day. I wasn’t sure whether to do my last long training run or not, but I figured I could just start and see how I got on. I managed 10 miles, which is what I was supposed to do, so I was happy with that. My son had his last football match of the season and they lost 6-3, but at least he scored two goals.

Day 119 – Monday 29th April – I woke up at 4am with my ears ringing again. My head and face feel like they are in a vice. They have felt like it for days. I tried to go without paracetamol so I could work out how ill I am, but caved in and took some at about 4pm. It’s six days until the marathon! My son had an extra rugby training session in the evening, which clashed with my daughter’s ballet. Luckily my husband and parents could juggle the ballet between them. This is how I spend my time when I’m waiting for the kids.

Day 120 – Tuesday 30th April – dare I say it, but I’m feeling slightly better today. The vice on my head has eased a bit and the ringing in my ear has quietened. I only had three miles on my training plan today, so that’s my April miles finished. 133 miles is less than in March, but you have to reduce your miles in the last few weeks before a marathon to give your muscles proper chance to rest and recover. Yes, I’m old school and write all my miles down in the back of my diary (on the address pages!).

Day 121 – Wednesday 1st May – I’ve got a steady amount of work now, although not enough to make up for all those quiet weeks. Over the course of this year, we’ve been gradually updating our lounge – the fireplace was removed, the curtains were replaced with blinds and last week we got a new carpet. At the end of the week, we will say goodbye to our brown sofa. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s served us well. But it’s brown! It was bought on a whim in a sale and it’s time for something new.

Day 122 – Thursday 2nd May – unbelievably, I was feeling worse again today. I’ve had a headache every day for about 12 days now and my ears are still ringing. We had my daughter’s parents’ evening today and it was very good indeed. Not only is she doing very well academically, she is also a delight to teach. We are very proud of her. This is the only photo I took – all my half marathon medals from the last couple of years, which I shared on Instagram.

Day 123 – Friday 3rd May – the new settee arrived! It is absolutely amazing. My husband worked it all out (it’s made up of seven smaller pieces) and I think he did a brilliant job. There’s definitely enough room for five people, even if most of them are stretched out.

Day 124 – Saturday 4th May – as it’s my marathon tomorrow, I volunteered at parkrun as tail walker. It is the tail walker’s job to finish last, so that nobody ever has to worry about being last. You can either walk with the person at the back, if they want the company, or walk just behind them if they want to walk in peace.

  1. Always happy to see your glowing face ready to take on the world 😀 congrats on completing 10 miles. Yeah, you can’t win every match but it’s important that one tries their best. How is Dark Fire?
Good to know you’re feeling better. That’s a great way to organise your running plan. So relaxing to see 😛
Your medals look great and so does your new couch! I didn’t know there was such a thing as a tail walker but the concept behind it is so caring and considerate of others. I never would’ve thought of that 🙂 Hope you enjoy the marathon

    • Dark Fire is brilliant! Well spotted for seeing what I was reading. I wasn’t sure about it from the cover, but I’m loving it.
We love the new sofa. Tail walker is a thing that parkrun have – it helps to make it more accessible and helps to make people feel more confident about taking part. I’ll let you know next week how the marathon goes!

  4. I like the idea of a tail walker. Nice idea.

Sorry to hear you’re still suffering being ill. Hopefully you’ll turn the corner and it’ll be gone asap. Races give out some nice medals. There’s a lot there.

  5. well done with your daughters achievements in school, you must be so proud of her, as well as the boys. I must say your skin is looking amazing at the moment, do you think all the running and outdoor air helps?

    • I’m really proud of my daughter, thanks very much. The great outdoors may help my skin, but it’s more likely to be the drugs I’m still on!

  6. I sympathise with the ringing ears, I have tinnitus and suffer every day with that.
Hope you have recovered enough to do the marathon.
The back walker sounds important, least then you know nobody has been injured and they don’t feel like they need to drop out.

    • Sorry to hear you have tinnitus, that must be so hard to deal with every day. I’m pleased to say that the ringing in my ear has almost gone now. Luckily I was OK for the marathon.

  7. The ringing ears sounds particularly unpleasant. I’ve never heard of a tail walker, but it sounds like a good idea.

  8. What a mixed week Sarah, and sorry you have been feeling so poorly for so long. Love your new sofa, and it looks very comfy. We are in desperate need of a new one as ours is 18 years old, but it’s SO comfy and I dread getting one that is not as comfortable. Well done to your daughter for parents evening, she is a star isn’t she x

    • Thanks very much, she really is a star! I hope you manage to find a new sofa as comfortable as your old one. 18 years is very impressive. X

  9. Hope that the run goes well. Sometimes having a headache is a sign of not drinking enough water. I hate to take medication myself and try to up my water in take instead sadly it doesn’t always seem to work out. #365

    • I drink so much water, you wouldn’t believe it! I probably drink about four litres a day. I realise my cold was actually sinusitis – not that knowing what it was made it go away any quicker!
