Choos vegan sweets from Swizzels

Did you know that vegetarians don’t usually eat sweets?

The vast majority of sweets contain gelatine, which is made from parts of animals. Not very nice, really. You may be surprised that it’s not just jelly sweets that contain gelatine, it really is most sweets.

I’ve been vegetarian since I was 17 (I’m 45 now) and I haven’t eaten sweets in all that time. My 17 year old son is a lifelong vegetarian, so he hasn’t eaten sweets either.

But over the last couple of years, and no doubt thanks to the huge rise in veganism, sweet manufacturers have realised they are missing out on a lot of custom. So they’ve started making more sweets which don’t contain gelatine. And my son and I were very pleased when Swizzels sent us a vegan hamper to sample.

Swizzels have a number of products which have always been vegetarian (like Fizzers and Double Lolly), but have now introduced Choos, for vegetarians and vegans who prefer a chewier sweet. They come in two varieties – Drumstick (like the classic chewy lolly) and Refreshers.

Drumstick Choos come in five flavours – original raspberry & milk, as well as strawberries & cream, cherry & apple, strawberry & banana and peaches & cream. Refreshers Choos also come in five flavours – classic lemon, apple, raspberry, pineapple and strawberry, all with the fizzy sherbet centres.

So after all these years of not eating sweets, what did we make of our vegan selection from Swizzels?

Needless to say, the sweets weren’t just restricted to the vegetarians in the family. Carnivores don’t even know they’re eating vegan sweets and they’re very happy to sample them. From the speed at which the sweets disappeared, it’s safe to say that the kids really enjoyed them. Apparently all of the flavours are nice and they really enjoyed the fizzy centres of the Refreshers Choos. My husband and younger kids loved the Drumstick Choos (they’re already fans of the Drumstick lollies).

As for me? It turns out that 28 years of not eating sweets means I can’t handle either the sweetness or the stickiness of them! But at least my son now gets to experience sweets after a lifetime of abstinence.

We were sent a vegan hamper from Swizzels for the purposes of this review. All our opinions are our own.

  1. Ahh I love the fact that Swizzels have done this! I didn’t realise they’d brought out choos or that some of those other sweets were veggie. I rarely eat sweets either, partly due to being veggie, but might have to give these a try.

    • It’s nice to know there are more options for vegetarians and vegans these days. It’s always been so difficult to find veggie sweets that I gave up trying years ago! Although Double Lollies have always been my go-to to suck on a plane as I suffer badly with my ears!
