Looking forward to house projects 2019

Some people love decorating, others hate it. But, it is one of those jobs that has to be done. It is all too easy to let things go and to realise, too late, that your house looks old-fashioned and shoddy.

Our house was definitely old-fashioned and shoddy when we moved in nearly five years ago. We’ve done some big projects since then – the kitchen and three bathrooms are all looking very nice and modern now. This year, we don’t want to spend a lot of money on big projects (we still have the utility and a final bathroom – yes we have a ridiculous FOUR toilets – stuck in the 1980s) and will save those for another year. Looking to 2019, we’re torn between transforming the lounge or our own bedroom. The lounge is far too brown (I have no idea why we thought brown would be a good colour), while our bedroom still has the ‘temporary’ wardrobes that belonged to our sons in the old house.

For the lounge, we’re tempted to change the carpet for laminate flooring, which we already have in the hall. Ordering online from somewhere like the Discount Flooring Depot will give us chance to compare prices. It also means we don’t waste too much time shopping for materials and equipment (the amount of time we’ve spent shopping for floor tiles in recent years is quite ridiculous!).

We might not even need to decorate the walls in the lounge, as my husband painted it a couple of years ago and one of the joys of teenage kids is that they don’t tend to dirty walls and carpets. (We definitely need to repaint our bedroom though, as it hasn’t been done since we moved in and it’s looking rather tired.) Putting up new pictures, mirrors or even a wall sticker could really transform the room. My daughter has had a wall sticker in her room for the last few years and it looks lovely.

The condition of our floor is important. If it looks shoddy, it doesn’t matter what we do to the rest of the room it will never look right. To be fair, our carpets are still in pretty good condition and we will definitely keep the carpet for the bedroom, but laminate flooring would really help freshen up our lounge. I’m assured that it is really easy to put down
and provided you buy the right grade, it will look good for many years to come. (However ‘easy’ it is, I will be staying away. I’m the kind of person who finds the most basic of tasks difficult and I would be sure to mess it up.) .

To get rid of the brown in our lounge, we definitely need new curtains in a fresher colour. I’m not sure if we will go for a shade of grey or something more colourful. Our settee is really comfy and it has a fair bit of life left in it, but it’s brown! We will be looking at our finances to decide if we can afford to get a new one, or whether we just need to cheer it up with some colourful cushions.

So that’s our ideas for our house for 2019. Here’s hoping at least some of them happen!

This is a collaborative post.

Lounge, House, Home, Decorating, 2019

Our lounge doesn’t look like this. But it would be nice, wouldn’t it?

  1. I love a good house project and I can’t believe you have been in your house for 5 years, I remember you moving in. We have been in our house 18 years next month, so we try and do a house project every year to keep on top of things. We did our bedroom last year and I am so glad we did, it has made such a difference. Not sure what the plan is for 2019 yet x

    • I know, I can’t believe we’ve been in the house five years either! It’s definitely a good idea to do something every year, it feels like the house is like the Forth Bridge, you get something looking nice, then something else seems to decline. I would definitely love to get my bedroom done! x
