Love it (see what I did there?) or hate it, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Yes, there are those that say why have a day to prove your love, why not prove it every day? But there are plenty of people who like to celebrate – with a meal out or in, a card and maybe a gift.
But what to buy? Chocolates, flowers, something practical? (You know I’m a weirdo who likes buying practical presents!) Or what about something a bit quirky and different?
Uncommon Goods is a New York-based company that sells unique jewellery, homewares and gifts. And they’ve recently started selling in the UK, which is good news if you’re on the lookout for a Valentine’s present that is a bit different. As a chocaholic, I like the look of the chocolate truffle making kit.
And if you’ve got a single female friend who’s not keen on Valentine’s Day, or maybe you’re a man who likes your wife to have a bit of fun, then the Porn for Women book would be perfect. No, it’s not exactly what it says on the tin – it’s pictures of men doing housework. Because we all know there’s no romance better than a man putting the bin out, right?
I’ve written many times before about how difficult men are to buy for, but Uncommon Goods has got it sorted. There’s plenty of gifts to help him enjoy his favourite tipple. I know my husband would like the cast iron touch lamp and if your husband or boyfriend is a geek, the maths formula tie or silver USB cufflinks should put a smile on his face.
And if you buy from Uncommon Goods, you can buy with a conscience, knowing that the company will donate $1 to charity. It has donated more than $1,000,000 over the last 12 years.
So if you’re planning on celebrating Valentine’s Day, there’s no need to resort to the supermarket teddy bear and overpriced flowers. Try something more original for a change!
