International Women’s Day: Lasting change – a digital postcard from Tanzania

Today (8th March) is International Women’s Day – all about making sustainable changes for the better for women. Sadly, there are still many inequalities for women:

  • 70% of the world’s poorest people are women and they own only 1% of the world’s property
  •  Many women and girls have poor access to education and about 2/3 of illiterate people are women.
So, to celebrate International Women’s Day, three VERY inspirational women, Team Honk founders Annie aka Mammasurus, Tanya aka Mummy Barrow and Penny from Alexander Residence are out in Tanzania right now. They are meeting women whose lives have been turned around thanks to Sport Relief and Comic Relief funding. This funding has created female entrepreneurs and #lastingchange for women, their families and communities.
Team Honk is all about raising cash for Sport Relief, but it is also about raising awareness. That’s why Annie, Tanya and Penny are sending digital postcards home to other bloggers to get the message out there far and wide. Every postcard is unique. Here’s mine…
This is Forestina and she’s a wine processor. Her business has grown from making 20 litres of wine a month to 250 litres after receiving help from The Gatsby Trust, Tanzania. Vital business skills, technical training and mentoring has given Forestina the confidence to think big and plan her business growth. It means she can work from home and her family has a better quality of life – she also employs two others. Forestina helps train up other women to help them with their business. She showed us her grape wine and hibiscus wine with great pride.
