The Gallery: Self portrait

This is me. In all my nearly 40 year old glory. Well, I say ‘all’, what I mean is ‘a fraction of my face and none of my body’ nearly 40 year old glory.

I pondered for a few seconds, maybe even a whole minute, about whether or not to do this one. Because (I know I say it all the time, blah, blah, blah, boring…) I don’t use recognisable pictures on my blog. I could just do a photo of a pile of stuff that I like? Oh, I did that a couple of weeks ago So it’s a real photo or nothing.

I pondered and I thought, sod it! I’ll just take a picture of a bit of me. With my phone. I’ll post it regardless of how bad or blurry I look.

I’m not used to taking photos of myself like ‘the young ones’. Apparently the young ones call them ‘selfies’ and do them all the time. Who knew? (I’ve made myself sound like I’m 75 now, haven’t I?). But I had a go.

You can see my legendary acne, my wedding ring and my lovely glasses. Which everyone has now, but I did have them before a lot of people. Just saying. You can’t really see my eyes. Because the computer screen is reflected in them. As it happens it shows Sticky Fingers, because I was still looking at it as I took the photo. My hair is untidy. I’ve been out in the wind most of the day. Oh, and that’s a bit of a Superdry sleeve you can see, of course. If you look really carefully you can see my blue nails and you might even see the diamond nose stud on the left side of my nose.

So that’s me. Only a bit of me, but it’s me.

but youth do like taking selfies i agree.
well done on posting a pic of yourself – it takes courage in more ways than one doesn’t it? i like that it captures your wedding ring and the reflections of your computer screen (maybe?) in your glasses. *sighs* x x

  3. I didn’t know ‘selfies’ either! Interesting shortening, keeping only ‘self’ : self-portrait? Selfish? Self-centered? I would go for self-centered in the case of the young ones ;)

Well I like your picture, particularly, like Jenny, your hand with your wedding ring and the reflection in your glasses, your eyes just about visible.

    xx

  4. Well I had never heard of ‘Selfies’ either but my ipad is full of them…not of me, but of my kids! And they insist on putting them through the ‘fat/oldies booth’ too! I chickened out of this one; couldn’t think of anything imaginative enough! I’m 41 now, it’s not all bad, honest ;) x

  8. Not just the young ones take selfies… I am a big fan of them and my blog is littered with them. I think they are a great way of really ‘seeing’ who you are.

  16. Thanks you all for your lovely comments, everyone :) So glad I’ve taught lots of you a new word – I feel really down with the kids now! (I read it in Heat magazine the other day!)
Glad to hear I don’t look 40, Tas! And glad to hear others are approaching it too. You’re right, Sonya, we are going to kick its arse!
The reflection in the glasses was kind of a happy coincidence. It seemed right, as I spend my evenings in front of a computer screen!
You’re right, Jacq, I never knew I could read so much into that little picture myself!

  17. Now I can look out for you at Britmums too ;-) I love the computer reflection in your glasses, if I still wore glasses (eyes lasered years back) that’s what’d be reflected in mine too.

  18. Yay! You will even get to see my entire face! ;) Glad I’m not the only one who would have the computer screen reflected in their glasses!

  21. Thanks very much, ladies! I don’t mind having my photo taken – as long as I’m with one of my kids and it’s taken by someone else with a proper camera! This whole taking photos of yourself thing is rather alien to me!

  22. Lovely photo, so nice to see you. I know I ought to take one (especially ahead of blog summit) but don’t like pictures of me either. Plus I’m slightly worried of what may happen if I post one lol.
I’ve learned so much more about you though so maybe I should.

  23. Thanks very much! What are you worried about? Are your fears the same as mine re your sons’ friends finding your blog? I don’t mind pictures of myself, I just don’t take them myself! I was amazed how much I learned myself from such a small fraction of me!

  24. Thanks very much, ladies :) Glad you like it, Susan. x
I’m sure 40′s not too bad, Claire. Age ain’t nothing but a number and we are living our lives to the full! x

  25. High five to you for joining in. I know it’s really difficult and being online and sat behind a computer screen gives us that comfort blanket that is anonymity. But I really do think a blog is all the nicer place to visit when you have a picture in your mind of who’s writing it :-)

  26. Thanks very much :) I do like to see other people’s pictures, but am not really brave enough to share mine. It is totally for my eldest’s sake rather than my own.
